Make sure it can access and analyse all types of files on your PC, including email, compressed, application and, crucially if you use a lot of Microsoft software such as Office, macro files. various methods to identify and deal with viruses. Heuristic analysis,

- the more characteristics found, the more likely it is a file is
infected. Behaviour blocking doesn't attempt to identify files with
viruses, but simply prevents them from spreading by blocking their
activities. Access control checks a file every time it is opened,
rather than running regular sweeps.
All of these methods have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's best to have anti-virus software that relies on more than one, and preferably all of them, to keep your system clean. If you run a network, make sure the package you choose can check networked, as well as local drives, and provides an efficient method of update distribution to multiple users.
