How many times have yopu wondered how to change
a certain setting in windows here is our breakdown on some useful
tips for the items in the contol panel :-
What does it do??
Allows you to turn on Windows features for people with disabilities.
Top Tip 1- if you
have hearing disabilities or just dont want sound alerts you can
make Windows produce visible rather than audio alerts. Select the
Sounds tab and click the "Use SoundSentry"
and "Use ShowSounds"
Top Tip 2 - If you
have a sight impairement select the Display Tab and click
"Use High Contrast" box to improve windows colour
scheme.
What does it do?? Automatically
detects new "plug and play hardware" also allows you to
install a hardware device manually.
Top Tip 1 - Normally you
should use the installation disk supplied with your new hardware.
Although if the device doesnt seem to have intalled properly you
can uninstall the device using Device Manager and re-install using
Add Hardware.
What does it do?? Lists
all the programs you have installed on your pc, helps add new applications,
lets you remove existing applications and Add or Remove built in
windows applications.
Top Tip 1 - if you download
and install lots of Applications you will soon find your harddisk
becomes full and this will slow down your system. every month or
so look through the list of installed programs in Add or Remove
Programs, and use the change remove option to uninstall any programs
you no longer require.
What does it do?? Provides
access to system administration services and setting for the computer.
It is will mainly be of use to system Administrators.
Top Tip 1 - We reccomend
that unless you are familiar with lower level system features of
Windows you leave most of the tools alone. However if your system
has become unstable the "Event Viewer" shows a log of
recent events and any with a red cross and error next to them could
help you locate the causes of the problems. The error messages themselves
can certainly be very cryptic, so take note of them and visit microsoft
support and conduct a search for further information on them.
What does it do?? Allows
you to adjust your computers date and time
Top Tip 1 - To allow your
computer to keep perfect time why not synchronise it with the atomic
clock over the internet. To do this First click on "Time Zone
Tab" to ensure your PC is using the correct timezone for your
location. Then click on "Internet Time Tab" and "Update
Now". Assuming you are online windows will synchronise with
the selected time server.
Top Tip 2 -Did you know
if you make the Windows XP task bar double-height, the standard
clock panel also shows the date?
Top Tip 3 - if you want
to make specialised changes to the way windows displays dates and
times in the taskbar you will need to download a third party application
such as the freeware application TclockEx
What does it do?? Allows
you to add new printers or set up the fax function on your modem
allowing you to send/receive faxes direct ly from/to your computer.
Also helps manage connections to existing printers.
What does it do?? Changes
the the default location your computer thinks it is located and
the keyboard layout it uses. NB changing location will not change
the language that menus appear in for that you will need a forgein
or multi-language edition of windows.
