Protect Your Business from the Biggest Security Risk: Human Error

Did you know that around 90% of cyberattack incidents have been made possible through human error? The biggest cyber security risk to your business is a human error from one of your employees.

Cyber criminals know that human error is one of the most difficult risks for businesses to prevent, which is why they are constantly inventing new methods of attack aimed to take advantage of this vulnerability.

What type of errors lead to cyberattacks?

A common example is where a fraudster poses as a CEO or another person of authority to make a request, using an email account that looks similar to the person’s email address that they are imitating. They then ask an employee to complete an action, such as changing the bank details of a business that your company needs to make a payment to. The employee innocently follows what they think are the instructions of a trusted senior member of staff and the payment is sent to a criminal gang.

Another employee error that is big cyber security risk is not protecting passwords appropriately, enabling a fraudster to use the password to access customer data and even financial data.

How to protect your business from human error

Unlike the types of cyberattacks that are aimed at technology weaknesses, which can be protected through cybersecurity software, human behaviour is more difficult to set up a security framework for.

The key solution to preventing human error is to provide training and regular communications to employees to help them to become cybersecurity experts. Cybersecurity training that is engaging and informative is most effective at developing cybersecurity knowledge.

The other factor to consider when deciding which type of training to provide to employees is that some employees will have a good knowledge of cybersecurity already, while some may be starting from zero. Finding training solutions that are effective for employees at all points of the spectrum can be a challenge.

The areas of weakness that are most frequently targeted with cyberattacks include:

  • Emails, communications and file sharing
  • Logging-in behaviour
  • Attitudes to policies around data protection and information handling
  • General awareness of cyber threats

Tips for improving cybersecurity in your business:

Observe behaviours

Appoint someone to observe how employees behave towards potential cyberthreats. Some training providers offer email simulations that employees need to flag as a threat but there are other ways to monitor adherence with policies, e.g. by gathering feedback.

Assess risks and prioritise

There will probably be many different risks that need to be addressed but if you do not have the resources to tackle them all, prioritise the biggest risks.

Access control management

Having a robust access control management framework will help to limit the number of users that can access sensitive data, reducing the risk of a breach.

Regular training and communications

Cyber risks are changing all the time and the only way to help your employees to stay up to date with trends is to share the information with them and provide training on the latest types of cyberattacks.
