Windows 10 End of Life: A Look at Your Options

When your business has become reliant on certain systems and tools, unexpected changes to these solutions can be massively inconvenient and disruptive to your work processes.

Windows 10 is bringing the curtains down next year, with Microsoft announcing that their service for Windows 10 will come to an end on 14 October 2025. If you are utilising Windows 10 on your machines, you will quite rightly be concerned about this upcoming change.

The term “end of life” sounds dramatic but it does not mean that Windows 10 will suddenly grind to a halt. However, despite remaining functional, there will be security and support implications that could cause problems. Essentially, the longer your business continues to use Windows 10 after the end of life date, the more problems you are likely to encounter.

Without regular updates your systems will be vulnerable to security issues. With no support available, any functionality problems will be yours to deal with alone, without the expertise of Microsoft to help.

Infographic detailing the end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, and the risks involved. It offers four options for users: do nothing, upgrade to Windows 11, buy new hardware, or extend Windows 10 support.

What are the options?

There are four options you can choose from after the Windows 10 end of life date:

Carry on as you are

It isn’t an option we recommend but some people will do nothing and hope for the best. This option is risky and will leave you unprepared for potential bumps in the road and head-on collisions. Cyber criminals will see your business as an easy target when you are exposed to security vulnerabilities.

Upgrade to Windows 11

By taking proactive action and preparing your business with the relatively seamless option of upgrading to the latest Windows version, you can avoid the pitfalls of losing support and security updates from Microsoft.

Invest in new devices

If it turns out that your devices are not compatible with Windows 11, you may need to invest in new devices. There are many other benefits of upgrading your existing devices, such as improved efficiency and performance. You will also boost your security features when you invest in newer technology.

Pay for security updates

If you choose to continue working with Windows 10, you can circumnavigate security issues by paying for security updates. Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates program on an annual subscription. This sounds like a good solution until you delve into the costs, which will increase each year. A 3-year subscription for updates will cost at least £350 – per device!

Troubleshooting tips

Even with all of these handy tricks, sometimes the best laid plans go awry. If you experience a glitch or bug, there’s no need to panic. You can usually fix some of the smaller problems yourself by trying simple methods such as:

  • REBOOT – We know it’s an old cliché, but sometimes turning it off and back on again is the best way to solve the problem. Turn it off, wait a few minutes, and reboot.
  • RESEARCH – Maybe the problem isn’t just happening to you. Try finding out if your provider is experiencing any issues of their own.
  • RE-ASSESS – If you’re getting the same problem repeatedly it might be worth calling in an expert to examine your system to see if anything can be improved.
