Since the dawn of the internet engineers and innovators all over the world have been labouring towards one goal: the fastest connection. WiFi has become an integral part of the world’s day-to-day lives, as important to us as food, water and air. However, many of us struggle with slow connections and sluggish signal. Read on to find out why your WiFi may not be pulling its weight and how to get it back on track.
When you find that your internet speed has ground to a halt, it’s easy to blame your provider for it all. This is not always the case, however. There are many different factors that can all contribute to your internet connection’s overall performance. These include:
• ROUTER – The age, coverage and software of your router can affect the quality of the signal that it puts out. If the router is old, in an awkward place or outdated it might not be able to handle your modern workload.
• POSITIONING – The arrangement of your workspace or home is a huge factor; large objects and walls can block or disrupt the signal. It’s always helpful to place the router as high as possible and in an open area if you can.
• SETUP – Do you have extenders or signal boosters plugged into your router? Also, is your WiFi optimised so that it can work at its maximum efficiency? Plus, is there any other systems interfering with your internet connection?
• DEVICES – The devices you use to connect to the internet can also be a concern. For example, if they are old or obsolete they won’t be able to process the connection in an effective way. Also, it’s important to remember that your connection will slow down as the number of devices connected to it increase.
When talking about the raw speed of an internet connection, the statistic being measured is the bandwidth. Put simply, the bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred by the network at any given time. It is usually expressed in ‘megabits per second’, commonly represented as Mb/s. For reference, to smoothly stream a film in 4K from a streaming service your connection must be around 20Mb/s.
Bandwidth is also a good measurement of the workload that a WiFi network can handle. When choosing a broadband provider for your business you should consider whether or not the bandwidth they offer is sufficient for the whole team to use. This will often depend on the number of team members you have, the nature of their work and the number of devices you need to be connected.
So, what can you do to make the most of your bandwidth? Well, it pays to make sure your WiFi settings and configurations are up to the task. Most people think that once the router is plugged in and the connection is set up, nothing else can be done to improve it. In fact, there are a few small tweaks that can have a massive impact on your internet experience and your team synergy.
First, let’s talk channels. If you’re setting up your office WiFi network, you’ll obviously need more than one router. These different routers will all contribute to the overall connection by providing their own channel. Channel management is essential for ensuring a great connection; spreading the stress evenly across all the channels will minimise interference and keep the bandwidth usage nice and even.
Next, as the owner of the business and the commander of the connection you have the power to introduce a network policy. This policy can restrict access to certain applications and websites in addition to streamlining the browser you use to surf the web. Blocking some sites can help increase productivity while also stopping your connection from getting cluttered up by unnecessary activity.
Finally, you should make a habit of checking for the most recent update for your system. Using outdated software can hamper your progress and get in the way of your work.
Even with all of these handy tricks, sometimes the best laid plans go awry. If you experience a glitch or bug, there’s no need to panic. You can usually fix some of the smaller problems yourself by trying simple methods such as:
